Rainfall was minimal this week in our North Eastern Zone, yielding another stretch of good conditions for pursuing beautiful, hard-fishing peacock bass in the remote and scenic Itapara, Mata Mata and Jufari Rivers. Altogether, 26 anglers on four different River Trains landed 2,205 fish, including four trophies in excess of 20 lbs. and another 11 fish in the 17 to 20 lb. bracket.

LIFE MEMORIES: For most of our anglers, catching peacock bass of any size one after another until their arms get tired qualifies as the trip of lifetime. If they get a real trophy, that’s icing on the cake. But Agmar Junior from Sao Paulo was just here for the icing. “I just wanted a fish of more than 80 cm,” he says. Fish over 80 cm (about 20 lbs.) are uncommon, but luck was on Agmar’s side. On only his second cast after switching to a new lure, a monster peacock smashed it. After a thrilling battle, he lifted his brilliantly colored 82 cm trophy for a quick photo before the release.
EXOTIC OF THE WEEK: As usual, peacock bass were the headliners this week, but plenty of other exotic Amazonian gamesters made appearances as well, including a number of hard-fighting wolf-fish. This trio all hit topwater lures nearly simultaneously and put on their signature spinning, twisting, aerial fight.
RAINFALL MANAGEMENT: The rain held off for yet another week in our North Eastern Zone, giving us very fishable conditions. In fact, three of the four River Trains operating this week reported slowly falling water levels. Combined with pleasant weather, that adds up to a great outlook for the coming weeks.
