RIVER PLATE Amazon OUTFITTERS´ PEACOCK BASS FISHING REPORTS POSTED WEEKLY!
February 25-27, 2012
Fishing Season is coming to an end. We will resume sending our weekly fishing reports next July 2012 when the 2012/13 Season begins. We will be working next months to improve this report as well as our water level information.
We wish to thank and congratulate our 2011/12 Season guests for the amazing results achieved throughout the season.
Brief Fishing Report (Carnival) February 22, 2012
Great fun and fishing this week at the Fly-In Floating Cabins Camp V, with our South-African guests.
Our 20th Anniversary with Top water Dorados and new eco-business model!
Pablo Dahbar 49Lbs on a Fly, January 07 2012
This Dorado Season in “Salto Dam” in Salto, Uruguay is being catalogued as one of the best in this operation’s history. Numbers and sizes landed on Top Water lures and flies (poppers) have been outstanding.
We expect that this will continue during the next coming months, and within the framework of the 20th Anniversary celebration we are offering a Last Minute Deal of a 50% discount for any party of two or more coming to fish to “Salto Dam” during the months of May, June and July. El Dorado is right there, waiting for the daring.
It is amazing to witness how River Plate’s “revolutionary” eco-busines model at “Salto Dam” worked out to be extremely successful environmetally and socially.
COPESA is the co-operative, of local registered professional fishermen in the exclusive Salto dam tail waters (Salto Dam) area. It was public and notorious that for years COPESA netted, 2-5 tons per month of trophy Dorados in the small 100 acre fishery specially during the spawning season. River Plate helped them to legally obtain exclusive rights on their river, based on the local legislation which guarantees their survival fishing excluding all commercial and sport fishing. At a later stage, we cut a deal with them to share their exclusive rights through financial compensations, joint venturing, guiding job opportunities and humanitarian help. In all cases, River Plate’s coin has to bigger than that of the commercial fishing industry. Now COPESA has converted to sport fishing guides and fishery keepers. Nobody knows best how to maneuver boats in the turbulent tail waters or to guide sportsman than ex-commercial fishermen. We are studying other areas in which we can extrapolate this successful business model.
February 11-13, 2012 (2-1/2 days)
Since water levels have dropped in three extreme North-East areas during the last week ,we will resume this week-end four of our seven operations. These will be at our Exclusive-Private Waters on the Omero, and Tapera and, at an open-to-the -public area at the very head waters of the Araca almost against Venezuela. (Guests have been dully notified of the presence of competing yachts, campers and Cabins)
The Branco Basin 10-day forecast are projecting moderate rain. You may wish to click on Caracarai and Boa Vista which are the two towns at the North-East Branco basin’s sphere-of-influence. To compare these moderate rain forecast with heavy rain forecasts click on Barcelos.
FISHERY NEWS:
- South (Tenharim Indian Reservation on the Marmelos). See area in pink in Fishery Map. Water levels which were perfect July –October are high which is normal this time of the year.
- Mid-South (Muhura Indian Reservation – Rivers: Preto, Matupiri, Igapo Acu, Tupana). See area in beige in Fishery Map. Water levels which were perfect during Set-Oct are now very high which is normal for this time of the year.
- Mid-North (South bank Negro tributaries) See area in purple in Fishery Map: Tributaries are high since there continues to be lots of rain again in the upper Negro basin. Since there is no hope for water-levels to drop, we moved our Floating Cabin V out until next September.
- North-West (The head waters of all South bank Negro tributaries including the Unini River) See area in purple in Fishery Map: Tributaries are high which is normal this time of the year. Careful! Despite the recent amount of bloggs , e- blasts, postings ,etc stating that the Unini will be opened to a limited number of outfitter, this is not factual .The Unini continues to be closed and there is no certainty if it will be opened and, less even, as to whom will operate.
- North (North bank Negro tributaries). See area in blue in Fishery Map. Tributaries are high due to lots of rain the last 8 days in the upper Negro basin. Since there is no hope for water-levels to drop, Floating Cabin VI will be navigating back to Manaus. However the Black Water Express yacht will operate on the Araca against Venezuela where water levels have dropped substantially over the last 7 days.(See recent Barcelos pictures bellow).
- North-East (Río Branco tributaries). See area in blue in Fishery Map: Only Noth-East side tributaries, including River Plate’s Exclusive Private-Water Tapera and Omero fisheries, are still fishable. We have five Fly In Floating Cabins in this area. Normally, it should be good fishing from December 15 to March 15 but, with LA NIÑA who knows?? Forecasts are reconfirming that the 3-year LA NIÑA anomalies cycle finally cease by this coming May.

DOWNLOAD REPORT
Peacock Bass fishing is very reasonable despite the last couple of days rain which was forecasted in our previous report. Last Saturday thru yesterday , only 2 ½ days, a total of 1024 fish were landed by 33 anglers, 53 of which were in the 8 - 16 lb class, 2 in the 17-19 lb class. (Last week, Jan 21-28, a total of 3826 Peacocks were landed by 19 anglers).
We have moved 5 of our 6 Floating Cabins to the Branco basin where forecasts continue to predict very little rain, except, next week-end. At our operations, water levels have fluctuated upwards and is almost at the jungle-line (see water level picture bellow) but, if 10-day forecasts are correct, peacock bass fishing should improve at our Exclusive-Private Waters: Omero, Xeurini, and Tapera.
The Branco Basin 10-day forecast, except for next week-end, continues to be of low rain probability (30-40%). You may wish to click on Caracarai and Boa Vista which are the two towns at the north Branco basin’s sphere-of-influence.
However, on the Negro basin tributaries, water levels continue getting higher and, except, for the Araca all tributaries are not fishable. Due to high water, 3 weeks ago, we have moved our Floating Cabins from our Exclusive Private-Water Jufari to the open-to-the-public upper Araca where regretfully we must continue to fish along with other sport fishing operators. Although there continues to be a 10-day forecast of high rain probability (60%) in the Negro basin, the upper Araca is still low and it should hold up for another 1-2 weeks. You may wish to click on Barcelos and São Gabriel da Cachoeira which are the two towns on the Negro basin’s sphere-of-influence.
If forecasts hold, our parties arriving at the end of this week should expect good peacock bass fishing at River Plate’s Exclusive Private-Water fisheries on the lower Branco basin and reasonable fishing at the open-to-the-public upper Araca.

- North (North bank Negro tributaries). See area in blue in Fishery Map. The upper Negro Water levels are a bit high but fishable. The “remote area”, open to the public, on the upper Araca continues to be fishable but it is getting more congested with fishing pressure from the melee of fast boats (which travel daily2-3 hours) and competitor’s floating cabins. River Plate has an unfinished fully licensed landing strip in this remote area waiting for a future private – water fishing lease.
- North-East (Río Branco tributaries). See area in blue in Fishery Map: All west and east side tributaries, including River Plate’s Exclusive Private-Water fisheries, are still fishable, specially at their respective lower ends since the Branco levels are comparatively low (see yesterday’s picture taken on the Tapera). We have five Fly In Floating Cabins in this area. Normally, it should be good fishing from December 15 to March 15 but, with LA NIÑA who knows?? Forecasts are predicting that the 3-year LA NIÑA anomalies cycle finally cease by this coming May.

Fishing is very good despite Friday’s and Saturday’s rain which we had forecasted in our previous report. In only 2 ½ days, a total of 1209 fish were landed by 19 anglers, 78 of which were in the 8 - 16 lb class, 2 in the 16-19 lb class.
We have moved 5 of our 6 Floating Cabins to the Branco basin where forecasts continue to predict little or no rain except for next Wednesday. At our operations, water levels have fluctuated through out the week just below the jungle line (see water level picture bellow) and, if 10-day forecasts are correct, peacock bass fishing should continue to be good at River Plate’s exclusive private waters: Omero, Xeurini, and Tapera.

Fishing is very good despite yesterday’s and this morning’s slight rain. In only 2 ½ days, a total of 1.610 fish were landed by 38 anglers, 129 of which were in the 8 - 16 lb class, 2 in the 16-19 lb class and 2 in the 20-22 pound class. Since we do not overfish our private-water fisheries top water fishing continues to be quite productive: props for bait casting and poppers for fly fishing.
On the Branco, except for next Wednesday, forecasts continue to predict little or no rain. Water levels have fluctuated thru out the week from fair to good (see water level picture bellow) and, if 10-day forecasts are correct, peacock bass fishing should continue to be good at the lower end of the Branco’s tributaries, such as, River Plate’s exclusive private waters: Omero, Xeurini, Tapera, and Jufari.

On the Tapera, water levels are 12" below the jungle-line on all mid-height banks which account for ~30% of the total banks. If you add the higher banks which account for ~20% you have ~50% of very fishable waters. And, if you factor-in a low 10-day rain forecast, you have a very optimistic fishing forecast for the week. Hotel Tropical
As of two weeks, we are using the Caesar’s Park Hotel for two reasons:
- (a) The Hotel Tropical is under construction and quite "run down"
-
(b) The Hotel Tropical logistics are not good and will get worst as of next season. The charter flight airport will be undergoing a 16-month reconstruction. As of next June, all charter flights will be on the other side of town nearer to the Caesar’s Park Hotel. Long time guests perceive this change has a major upgrade .The Caesar’s is well known for its 5- star service and, except for arrival day transfer (30 minutes), the logistics are superior. No more long evening car rides into town during rush hour to reach the famous Buffalo steak house.
From the Caesar’s it is only a 5 minutes drive. Guests can now have a short lunch at the hotel, fast nap, visit the Museum and Theater and still be at Buffalo at 7pm. From the Caesar’s, morning van transfer for charter flights now and next year is only 15 minutes. But next year, from the Hotel Tropical on Saturdays it will be 50 minutes and on Fridays (rush hour) it could be as much as 1 ½ hours!
Photo on the left was sent via IP-satellite on Sunday, 15th of January at 4:00 pm from Itapara River, Floating Cabins II Water levels are 12" below the jungle-line on all mid-height banks (check picture background).
The 23 pounder on the right was landed two days ago, the first of its size since the New Year.

Fishing is very good despite rain during the last 3 days. In only 2 ½ days, a total of 1519 fish were landed by 26 anglers, 130 of which were in the 8 - 16 lb class, 4 in the 16-19 lb class and one 20 pounder. Most fishes were caught on top water lures since we do not overfish our private-water fisheries.
On the Branco, as 10-day forecasts predicted, it rained for the last 3 days; however, the same forecasts predict another 10 days of little or no rain. Water levels are now fair and, if forecasts are correct, peacock bass fishing should be excellent at the lower end of the Branco’s tributaries, such as, River Plate’s exclusive private waters: Omero, Xeurini, Tapera, and Shufaris. We have moved our Floating Cabins out of the upper Negro tributaries (Eneuixi Indian Reserve) as forecasts are not good. (La Nina!)
The Branco Basin 10-day forecast continues to be of low rain probability (10-30%). You may wish to click on Caracarai and Boa Vista which are the two towns on the Branco basin’s sphere-of-influence.
However, there are still risks ahead since LA NIÑA’s global influence is forecasted to end only in May. For instance, in the Negro basin there continues to be a 10-day forecast of high rain probability (60%). You may wish to click on Barcelos and São Gabriel da Cachoeira which are the two towns on the Negro basin’s sphere-of-influence.
Therefore, our parties arriving at the end of this week should have great peacock bass fishing on River Plate’s exclusive private-water fisheries on the lower the Branco basin.

As a reference, the total fish caught last week Nov. 19-26 by 15 anglers was only 758 for the full week.
In these last 3 days (Nov. 26 – 28) fishing continues to be poor since water levels continue to be high. Despite our up-front rescheduling recommendations, the two parties that decided to come are enjoying vacationing in the comforts of our new cabins placed in the rainforest remoteness.
Ten-day forecasts from three different sources continue to indicate above normal rains due to La Nina which is in the last phase of a 3-year cycle. Therefore, we continue to adamantly suggest that parties reschedule. If guest wish to fish the Negro river, our riverboat the Black Water Express is fully available; however, the fishing conditions are not better.

In only 2 ½ days, a total of 480 fish were landed by 23 anglers, 15 of which were in the 10- 16 lb class.
Fishing is bellow average but, it seems that on the west side tributaries of the Branco, rainfall in the last 7 days was not as frequent and water levels have stooped rising. On the upper Branco, by the city of Caracarai, water levels have dropped over the last five days. If it continues this way, fishing this week could turn out to be very good since water levels in many areas on this basin are only ½ foot above the jungle line. But, again, with La Niña who knows? La Niña’s forecast is that this is the last year of a 3-year cycle and that everything will go back to normal.
On the other hand, there continues to be a 10-day forecast of rain. We are therefore letting next week parties decide if they wish to reschedule.

Fishing continues to be poor due to continuing rain fall across the Negro and Branco basins with rising water levels. Except for two anglers (click chart), we rescheduled all of our parties into the next 4 months.
We are therefore strongly suggesting all parties arriving this weekend to reschedule up until mid March 2012. Except for week-end rains, there is a 10-day forecast of mild rain so, maybe, the second week of november will be fishable.
We will post this coming Monday 7th by 1 pm ECT a water level/fishing update.

Except for maybe next Saturday and Sunday , there is a 10-day forecast of moderate rain on the Branco basin and the north bank Negro tributaries. If the forecast holds and water warms up a bit , it should be excellent fishing by next Saturday.
Next week’s anglers should come down since water level odds are in favor for good fishing.
