Fishing Reports

Mid week fishing report, 9-11 January 2021 (2 ½ days)

The private Omero lakes are currently the only fishable waters in the Amazon

Weekend's tally
(note: this 2 ½ day report is to rush last weekend's conditions to our incoming anglers)
Curicuri (part of the Omero system) in Dry Season-Zone N. East: The party of only 4 anglers landed 166 peacocks over the weekend, including 15 fish over 12 pounds and one 18 pounder. Fishing is very good despite high waters, caused by heavy rains in the last 5 days.

The last departing group of 7 anglers landed over 600 peacocks over the full week, despite heavy rains, with 30 fish over 12 pounds and 2 fish over 18 pounds including Aruana, Arapaima, Sardinata, Tambaqui and Apapa. One Arapaima weighed over 40 pounds.

Water Level Report
Dry Season-Zone N. East: Fishing has dwindled 30-40% since startup due to rising water levels on the Omero lakes. Water levels are above the jungle line but very fishable. Since last Friday water levels have stopped rising, and the 10-day accumulated rain forecasts indicate only 0.23-0.71 inches of rain at the headwaters of the Rio Branco which forms the Omero lakes (see below the forecast for the nearby towns of Caracarai and Boa Vista). However, rain forecasts are higher for other towns in Dry Season-Zone N. East (1.57 inches in Rorainopolis and 2.38 inches in Barcelos), which has a negative impact on our private fisheries on the Itapara, Kabori and upper Jufaris.
As a favorable aspect, note that the 3-month rain forecast (see "Previsao Climatica" below) shows that our favored area has less expected rainfall than all 4 Dry Season-Zones.
In conclusion, our guess work would indicate that on the Omero water levels could go up a bit more due to last week's rainfall, but it should stabilize and then drop over the next 4 to 6 days.
Dry Season-Zone N. West: Water levels are too high, which is not normal for this time of the year. Therefore, we have moved most of our stand-by operations out of this zone on the lower Xeurini into the Kabori and the above mentioned Omero lakes system.
Dry Season-Zone S.East: Water levels in this area 150 miles south of Manaus are high, which is normal for this time of the year.
Dry Season-Zone S.West: Water levels in this area 400 miles south of Manaus are high, which is normal for this time of the year.

Total expected rainfall for the upcoming 10-day period:

  • Caracarai: 0.71 inches
  • Rorainopolis: 1.57 inches
  • Boa Vista: 0.23 inches
  • Barcelos: 2.38 inches
  • Manaus: 3.95 inches

For more details, see below charts:

The "Previsao Climatica" (Weather Forecast) map below depicts the expected rainfall for the first three months of 2021. Note that our fishing area, Dry Season-Zone N. East coincides with the low rainfall area colored in white. Meanwhile, the Barcelos area where most anglers fish (in public waters) is in the high rainfall area colored in blue.

Water Level Report
Dry Season-Zone N. East: Fishing has been very good for the last 16 consecutive weeks, and forecasts indicate that the Omero, upper Itapara and Kabori water levels should be falling into reasonable levels, which is expected at the end of December.

We have moved our standby operations into these areas. See how these water level dynamics coincide with the large blue and white map labelled "Previsao Climatica".
Dry Season-Zone N. West: Water levels on the northern tributaries of the Negro River have not begun to drop, which is not normal for this time of the year. Therefore, we have moved most of our stand-by operations out of this zone on the lower Xeriuini into the Kabori, also in Dry Season-Zone N. East.
Dry Season-Zone S. East: Water levels in this area 150 miles south of Manaus are high, which is normal for this time of the year.
Dry Season-Zone S. West: Water levels in this area 450 miles south of Manaus are high, which is normal for this time of the year.

The "Previsao Climatica" (Weather Forecast) map below depicts the expected rainfall for the first three months of 2021. Note that our fishing area, Dry Season-Zone N. East coincides with the low rainfall area colored in white. Meanwhile, the Barcelos area where most anglers fish (in public waters) is in the high rainfall area colored in blue

WEEKEND'S TALLY
Note: This 2 ½ days report is to rush last weekend's conditions to our incoming anglers.
Curiucu River in Dry Season-Zone N. East: The Francisco group of 8 anglers landed 300 fish over the weekend, including a 17 pounder. Last week's group finished with 1070 caught fish, with two 19 pounders and a 21 pounder (not shown in pictures yet). Over 10% of the landed fish included Aruana, Arapaima, Sardinata, Tambaqui and Apapa. Two fishermen landed non-stop Aruana with dry flies. Water levels in this area have lowered over the last week and fishing went from very good to excellent.

Water Level Report
Dry Season-Zone N. East: Fishing has been very good for the last 8 consecutive weeks, and forecasts indicate that the upper Itapara, Kabori and upper Jufaris water levels should be falling into optimum levels, which is normal at the end of December. We will be moving our stand-by operations into this area. See how this water level dynamics coincide with the large green map below.
Dry Season-Zone N. West: Water levels on the Negro river northern tributaries have all began to drop, and as such we have moved two of our stand-by operations into this area for our incoming January anglers.
Dry Season-Zone S. East: Water levels in this area 150 miles south of Manaus are high, which is normal for this time of the year.
Dry Season-Zone S. West: Water levels in this area 450 miles south of Manaus are high, which is normal for this time of the year.

Below you can see the map of expected precipitation for the first three months of 2021. Note that our fishing areas coincide with the low rainfall area in light brown colors. However, the Barcelos area were most anglers fish in public waters is in the high rainfall area (in green).
